Auction strategy
How long should an online auction run?
Most product auctions on a Shopify store should run 3 to 7 days, long enough for your audience to discover the listing and set max bids but short enough that the ending feels urgent; scheduled short auctions work when you're driving traffic to a specific moment.

Auction length is a tradeoff between discovery (more time means more people find it) and urgency (a closer deadline means more action). The right answer depends on how your traffic arrives.
3–7 days: the default
If your bidders come from an email list, social posts, and organic traffic over time, give the auction most of a week. It lets your ending-soon emails do their job and gives proxy bidders time to set max bids. End on an evening in your customers' time zone — most bidding happens in the last hour.
Under 24 hours: drops and events
If you're announcing a drop, going live on social, or selling at an in-person event, short auctions concentrate attention. Schedule the start time so the auction opens when your announcement goes out, and end it while the audience is still watching. Auction Now lets you schedule the start in advance and stagger end times across a batch.
Longer than 7 days: rarely
Two-week auctions lose urgency and bidders forget. If you need long exposure for a high-value item, run a normal fixed-price listing for two weeks that announces the upcoming auction, then run the auction itself for a week.
Stagger multiple auctions
When you run a batch, end them a few minutes apart rather than all at once. A bidder who loses one auction is at peak motivation to win the next, and staggering keeps them on your store. Soft close means each one resolves cleanly before the next closes.
